CAMM
Crediton Area Marketing and Management was formed by the Crediton Chamber of Commerce, of which it is a part, in 2000 with the aim of bringing together the commercial, statutory and voluntary sectors in Crediton and the surrounding villages with the following objectives:
-
To consider the present situation of Crediton and surrounding rural
area
-
To co-ordinate and encourage efforts by all local organisations to
maximise effectiveness, and to monitor action necessary to implement
agreed plans and projects
-
To discuss, suggest and explore the needs for regeneration and growth
-
To initiate, evolve and present proposals for obtaining financial
and other assistance to support identified projects and schemes.
-
To action, monitor and assist plans designed to ensure a more
rewarding future for the whole area, and those living and working
within
it with the aim of improving the area’s economic, social
and environmental future on a sustainable basis.
REGULAR ACTIVITY
Every year CAMM organises a series of activities in Crediton that aims to help the businesses in the town and to make Crediton a nicer place to live and visit. In the summer CAMM organises the flower arrangements in the High Street/Union Road/Union Terrace area. At Christmas it organises the town's Christmas decorations. It also organises a promotional advertising feature for local businesses, either as a local newspaper advertisement or a brochure delivered throughout the town. While these activities are organised by CAMM they are paid for by the local traders.
CAMM has supported the Town Hall restoration and the development of the new Town Square. It continues to value and support the Tourist Information Centre in the High Street.
CCTV
For the last three years CAMM has worked in partnership with the Creedy Local Action Group of the Mid Devon Community Safety Partnership (CLAG), which was established under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, to bring CCTV to Crediton. CLAG is itself a partnership of organisations from the voluntary, commercial and statutory sectors on which the Chamber of Commerce is represented.
The Chamber of Commerce has operated a single unmonitored CCTV camera in Crediton High Street, together with a VCR tape recording system, for the last two years. By March 2007 this will be replaced by a significantly enhanced digital network of five cameras (three of which will be installed by March 2007, with the other two to follow once funding becomes available), digital recording equipment and three monitoring stations at the Town Hall, Crediton Police Station and a dedicated CCTV monitoring centre run by the Mid Devon District Council in Tiverton. The cameras can be individually radio controlled from any of the monitoring stations.
While CLAG has played the leading role in CCTV, CAMM's role has been crucial in making the new system possible. It has made a substantial financial contribution to the new system and continues to be involved in raising funds for further cameras. The new system will be operated by Crediton Town Council, to whom the equipment has been given by CAMM and CLAG.
CAMM is now working with the Lords Meadow Industrial Group on updating the CCTV system in the industrial estate.
PARTNERSHIP
Working in partnership with others is a key part of CAMM's present work. Along with the Chamber of Commerce, the Crediton Traffic Action Group and others, it has helped stop the closure of the A377 in February 2007 (funding a key survey which showed that there was an alternative to closure).
CAMM's future plans include an increase in policy work,
looking at a range of issues that affect Crediton and the rural
areas around the town. It has made a submission to the local planning
authority on the proposed new Tesco development. This is available
on a new section of this website which provides submissions, CAMM
policy papers and documents produced by others that are relevant
to Crediton and the rural area around it. To access this section,
